Start in Port Moresby, with the National Museum and Nature Park providing a fitting introduction to your trip. Move on to Tari where you will be based at award-winning, eco-friendly Ambua Lodge set in a spectacular mountain landscape. Meet the flamboyant Huli Wigmen, with their extraordinary headgear. Take a charter flight down to the Sepik River, where you will be based at the wonderfully remote Karawari Lodge, a fine example of rustic comfort in the middle of the steamy lowlands. Learn about the painful rite of passage of crocodile scarification. Take another chartered flight back to the highlands, and settle in to the breathtaking Rondon Ridge, set above the town of Mt Hagen. Go on nature walks and meet even more intriguing tribes like the Polga Mudmen and the Chimbu Skeleton Men. Extend your trip to Rabaul to encounter the Baining fire dancers, view the active Tavurvur stratovolcano and its hot springs, and search for the past in the World War II wrecks.

PORT MORESBY

Learn about Papua New Guinea at the National Museum with artefacts from 22 provinces of the country. Walk to the nearby Parliament Haus, built in the style of a Sepik-style haus tambaran, or spirit house. Visit the popular Nature Park, the country’s only internationally recognized wildlife park and discover wildlife species rarely found outside of New Guinea such as the elusive Bird of Paradise, Cassowary, and Tree Kangaroos.

PORT MORESBY / TARI 

Fly to Tari, located 2,167m above sea level in the Southern Highlands. Explore the Tari Valley - home of the Huli - a proud and flamboyant people still largely living the same way that their ancestors did. Go on a guided nature walk through the alpine forest, and at dusk spot the exquisite Ribbon-tailed Astrapia.

Meet the Huli Wigmen with their human hair wigs adorned with colourful flowers, with dances and songs fashioned on that of the mating rituals of the Birds of Paradise.

TARI / KUNDIMAN

Fly to Kundiman. Meet the Sepiks who live completely off the land and river, weaving baskets for catching fish; gathering, preparing and cooking their staple food from the Sago Palm. They express their culture and beliefs through their art, inspiring the carving of incredible masks, drums, baskets and sculptures that integrate with their daily life and animist beliefs. This dense tropical lowland rainforest, the Sepik Region houses an immense variety of flora and fauna and bird species.

KUNDIMAN

Cruise along the jungle-fringed waterways of the Karawari River where boatmen, standing upright, paddle their slender dugout canoes with sculpted silhouettes of crocodile masks. Village life including carved totems, drums, woodcarvings and different expressions of art are also experienced. Meet the Crocodile Men, who have undergone ritual scarification in one of the world’s most extreme initiation ceremonies, deep cuts made to resemble crocodile skin.

KUNDIMAN / MT HAGEN

Fly to Mt Hagen and discover a valley with some of the oldest evidence of agriculture in the world. Take  guided nature walk around the trails at Rondon Ridge.

MT HAGEN

Explore the Hagen area and Wahgi Valley featuring the unique culture and tradition of the Melpa people, suppliers of a number of important industries, such as tea, coffee and mining. Meet even more fascinating tribes such as the Polga Mudmen, with their distinctive ghoulish clay masks and elongated bamboo fingers, and the Chimbu Skeleton Men, painted in black and white to simulate skeletons.

MT HAGEN / PORT MORESBY

Fly back to Port Moresby.
