How to keep warm in Antarctica

Antarctica is one of the most unpredictable places in the world, so it is important to be prepared for cold in one of the most remote landscape in the world. Though we all know the first rule to pack for Antarctica is to pack early, but what should you really pack when you’re headed to Antarctica? Here’s our guide to keep warm in Antarctica.

Each cruise to Antarctica is different, but there are some essentials you can bring to make your experience more comfortable and rewarding.

1. LAYERING IS ESSENTIAL BUT BEWARE OF

OVER-PACKING

We know layering is the absolute essential, and while it is tempting to pack heaps of bulky sweaters and overcoats, what you really need is a solid combination of short and long-sleeved tops, and a mixture of thermal and non-insulated clothing. It will be quite warm on board the ship so it is best to have layers you could easily take off when on board and put back on when you are heading out on deck.

2. INVEST IN WATERPROOF AND INSULATED BOOTS

Invest in a good and comfortable pair of knee-high waterproof and insulated boots as you will be using them everywhere - be it to get from the cruise ship to the shores or to ride in an inflatable landing boat. Make sure you get a pair that is knee-high to avoid wet feet.

3. GOOD TO HAVE WATERPROOF PANTS

While your ship is likely to provide boots and waterproof upper layers, it is wise that you pack some waterproof and insulated snow pants for shore excursions and kicking about on deck while looking for orcas.

4. WHEN IN DOUBT, PACK MORE SOCKS

Yes, that is right. Always pack plenty of socks. It is wise to pack a few of both the thick, thermal socks and the thinner, everyday socks. The thicker socks will get wet when you are exploring the shore so it is good to have few. The thinner socks are perfect for your time on board the ship.

5. KEEP YOUR NECK COVERED

With Antarctica's cold wind on the boat and the ice, loose hat is the recipe for disaster in Antarctica. Opt for a beanie that fits really snugly on your head or a hat that covers your ears to stay warm.
